Disease Surveillance SystemsThe advent of personal computers has resulted in data systems that are not standardized. Organizational and governmental units collect and monitor health related program data in a vacuum. It is very difficult to discern patterns in health status and disease when we have islands of data-and the islands cannot communicate in the same language. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), surveillance-the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of health-related data-is the foundation of disease prevention and control at the state, local, and national levels. PHRG is a pioneer in building surveillance systems that tie disparate databases together in a meaningful way. For example, The Maine Bureau of Health recently awarded the planning phase of the state's National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) to PHRG. The result will be a plan for a communicable disease data collection and reporting system for Maine. Disease surveillance systems may also benefit health care payers and any organization with multiple datasets which, when analyzed together, help us to understand big picture issues. |
